U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today released this statement following the death of Lieutenant Colonel Jay Zeamer, Jr. Lt. Col. Zeamer, who was 88, died last night at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor. He was Maine’s last surviving Medal of Honor recipient.
“Lt. Col. Zeamer was a true patriot. His heroic and selfless acts during World War II will long be remembered. He was most deserving of our nation’s highest military honor, and we continue to owe so much to him and all of the brave men and women who defended us in the past and continue to defend our freedom today. His courage and leadership saved the lives of his flight crew and he set an example of bravery for generations to come.”
