WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Ranking Member and incoming Chair of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, today issued the following statement regarding the pier collapse in the Eastport harbor:
“This is a harrowing example of why investments in our transportation infrastructure are so essential,” Senator Collins said. “Not only do they create jobs and economic opportunity, but they also improve safety and save lives. Last year I helped secure $6 million in federal funding for the Port of Eastport to support the replacement of this failing breakwater, which unfortunately is now an even more critical need. My office will work with state and local officials to determine if federal funds might be available to deal with this emergency, and I will continue to work closely with Eastport and the Maine Department of Transportation as it works to rehabilitate the pier and replace the breakwater.”
BACKGROUND
Last year, Senator Collins
announced that the Port of Eastport received $6 million in National Infrastructure Investments program grant funding, also known as the TIGER program. Planning for the replacement project was recently completed before today’s pier collapse.
