Waterville, ME - Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks and met with student delegates at the annual American Legion Family DIRIGO STATE Program held at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. DIRIGO STATE is the first coed, Legion Family sponsored program nationwide. DIRIGO STATE encompasses all the same aspects of individual Boys and Girls State programs but gives the delegate a more realistic approach to the political process.

“It was such a pleasure to spend time with young Mainers participating in Dirigo State this year,” said Senator Collins. “This program teaches students how to run their own government with hands-on learning and youth leadership programs. Each of these students have a bright future.”

In 2022, the American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State joined together to create DIRIGO STATE, the first coed, Legion Family sponsored program nationwide. At DIRIGO STATE, student delegates will spend a week participating in the same political and governmental process as citizens and public officials of the State of Maine.
