SENATOR COLLINS DECLARES MARCH 2nd "READ ACROSS AMERICA" DAY

In an effort to encourage parents to read to their children, U.S. Senator Susan Collins is pleased to announce that she has introduced a bipartisan Senate Resolution, along with Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), declaring Tuesday, March 2nd "Read Across America Day."

This is the 13th anniversary of "Read Across America Day."  The National Education Association (NEA) chose March 2nd to commemorate the birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.  The NEA hopes the campaign will encourage children to read and encourage parents to read to their children.

"Reading is a wonderful and worthwhile experience.  During my time in the U.S. Senate, I have visited more than 170 schools in Maine to encourage students to read.  These visits are some of my most rewarding experiences," said Senator Collins.  "It is my hope that "Read Across America Day" will continue to help families get into a daily practice of reading to their children.  I applaud schoolteachers, librarians, and most of all, our parents, for their commitment to teaching America's children the joys of reading."
