Washington, D.C. -- Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) has signed on to legislation that was introduced today and aims to stem harmful fuel emissions that contribute to global warming. The Ten in Ten Fuel Economy Act was introduced by Senators Olympia Snowe and Diane Feinstein and would increase CAFE standards for automobiles to 35 miles per gallon by the year 2017.
The bill would establish a commonsense path to decrease carbon dioxide emissions from automobiles and would work to reduce our dependence on foreign oil sources. Carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas responsible for global warming. In addition to mandating mile-per-gallon gasoline standards, the measure would require that all vehicles be equipped with on-board displays indicating real-time fuel consumption.
