SENATOR COLLINS COSPONSORS BILL TO ENSURE CONTINUED ACCESS TO COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS

Washington, D.C. – Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) has signed on as an original cosponsor of legislation introduced today by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) to reauthorize the federal Health Centers program, which helps provide health care services to low income families and people in medically underserved areas.  The program was last reauthorized in 2002, and it is set to expire in September of this year.    Specifically, the bill would reauthorize the program for another five years through FY 2011, at an initial funding level of $1.963 billion for FY 2007, matching the Administration’s request for the program.    “Our Community Health Centers furnish critical health care services throughout the state of Maine, ensuring patient access to quality preventive and primary health care even in the most medically underserved areas,” said Senator Collins.  “This legislation will make certain that our Community Health Centers can continue to play a vital role in our health care delivery system.”   Throughout her time in the Senate, Senator Collins has worked to increase resources for Community Health Centers throughout Maine and elsewhere.    ###
