U.S. Senator Susan Collins is pleased to congratulate the Lewiston Maineiacs, the first American-based hockey team to win the President’s Cup. The Maineiacs beat the Val-d’Or Foreurs last night in Game 4 of the finals.
“In just a few short years, the Lewiston Maineiacs have become fan favorites—drawing crowds from all across Maine. Today, those fans and the team are celebrating an outstanding achievement,” said Senator Collins. “I join all the others in offering my congratulations to the team on its victory in the President’s Cup and wishing it continued success in the years to come.”
Senator Collins authored legislation, that was signed into law last year, that expanded the number of P-1 visas available for athletes who play on high-level amateur teams such as the Lewiston Maineiacs and the Portland Sea Dogs. Senator Collins’ legislation levels the playing field for minor league sports teams that depend on getting the best athletic talent. Before Senator Collins’ legislation was signed into law, the Maineiacs franchise faced tremendous difficulties obtaining the necessary visas and, as a result, the team had to reschedule or cancel several early season games placing a hardship on the team, its talented players, and threatened the significant revenue the team generates for the Lewiston-Auburn area.
