SENATOR COLLINS CHRISTENS NEW CRUISE SHIP IN ROCKLAND

On July 4, U.S. Senator Susan Collins christened The Independence, American Cruise Line's newest ship. The Independence will home port in Portland and carry 104-passengers on cruises along the Maine Coast this summer with stops in several communities including Rockland.

The Independence was built by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland.

"To name this beautiful ship Independence on Independence Day is perfect timing. It is the right name at the right time, but there is more to celebrate. This is an all-American ship, built by our skilled workers and sailing under our flag," said Senator Collins. "A blend of respect for the past and commitment to a vibrant future ties together all of the Maine destinations on the ship's exciting itinerary. The growing importance of cruise ship visitors to Maine's coastal communities proves the value of this combination."
