Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins recently attended the sixth annual Friends of New England’s Finest reception to honor Officer Nathan Desjardins of the Fryeburg Police Department, who fell in the line of duty in 2017, and Detective Christopher Gardner of the University of Maine Police Department, who died as a result of injuries sustained in a training accident in 2016.  Their names were recently added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

“I always appreciate the opportunity to thank our police officers, game wardens, and state troopers during National Police Week,” said Senator Collins.  “My discussion with Fryeburg Police Chief Potvin was poignant as we mourned the loss of Officer Nathan Desjardins in the line of duty as well as of Detective Christopher Gardner from the UMaine Police Department.”

The reception was followed by the 30th annual candlelight vigil on the National Mall to honor 129 officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2017 and 231 officers who were killed in prior years.

Friends of New England’s Finest is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., organized exclusively to honor New England law enforcement during National Police Week.  Senator Collins is a cosponsor of this year’s Senate Resolution honoring National Police Week.
