Portland, ME – Yesterday morning, U.S. Senator Susan Collins attended the 2022 Blue Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. Bishop Robert P. Deeley celebrated the Mass and was joined by priests and deacons from throughout the Diocese. Local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency services personnel were recognized for their faithful commitment and self-sacrifice. Ladder trucks from the Portland and South Portland Fire Departments displayed the American flag above Franklin Street prior to the Mass. People of all faiths were encouraged to attend and join in showing gratitude to these dedicated heroes.
“When tragedies or disasters strike, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMTs are the first on the scene, rushing into danger to save lives. The Blue Mass is a special celebration that honors these heroes who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe,” said Senator Collins. “May God bless our first responders who protect our communities.”
The Blue Mass, referring to the blue uniforms worn by so many public safety personnel, dates back to 1934 and is a venerable tradition in many dioceses. The Mass was planned and organized by diocesan officials and representatives from local, county, and state public safety agencies. Color guards, including a multi-jurisdictional honor guard, were in attendance, as well as the Maine Public Safety Pipe and Drum Corps, which performed before and after the Mass.
Last year, Senator Collins attended the Blue Mass at the Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul in Lewiston.
