SENATOR COLLINS APPLAUDS PRESIDENT OBAMA’S DECISION TO RECONSIDER EPA POLICY

U.S. Senator Susan Collins today praised President Barack Obama’s decision to direct the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reconsider a previous rejection of a waiver, requested by California and at least a dozen other states, including Maine, to the Clean Air Act. The waiver would allow the states to set their own vehicle emission standards.

“President Obama’s decision to grant California a waiver to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles is welcome news. As a result, states like Maine, that wish to do so, can proceed with plans to adopt California’s rules that would improve fuel efficiency 40 percent by 2020. This is an important step towards energy independence,” said Senator Collins.

If granted, the waiver would allow the states to adopt their own standards to limit emissions from passenger vehicles.
