U.S. Senator Susan Collins released this statement following the groundbreaking ceremony for a $75 million terminal expansion the Portland Jetport. This construction project will double the size of the existing terminal, increase airport security, and provide much needed jobs to help Maine's economy.
"The Jetport is a gateway to Maine for countless tourists, business travelers, and residents each year. Rather than traveling to airports out-of-state, travelers have increasingly chosen Portland. The Jetport is one of the fastest growing airports in New England, and this expansion will provide sufficient terminal space for future growth," said Senator Collins.
"In my role as Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee, I was pleased to assist the Jetport last September in securing a $9.2 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant for a new checked baggage explosive detection system. This system will be incorporated into the Jetport expansion. These grant funds will help ensure that state-of-the-art screening technology is employed to enhance security for passengers traveling through the Jetport and it also will double the number of TSA passenger screening lanes, creating less disruption for passengers."
