SENATOR COLLINS APPLAUDS DOWNEASTER EXPANSION TO BRUNSWICK

In a statement read today during a groundbreaking ceremony in Brunswick, U.S. Senator Susan Collins applauded the expansion of Amtrak's Downeaster line from Portland to Brunswick.

"The extension of the successful Downeaster line to Brunswick is welcome news for Mainers and visitors alike. Not only will this infrastructure project create jobs, it will also help encourage tourism, thereby boosting the economy in the Midcoast region. This is especially welcome in the Brunswick area, which is coping with the closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station," said Senator Collins.

"Extending Amtrak service north to Brunswick has long been a goal of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority and the State of Maine. Today, as steel rail is unloaded in Brunswick, that goal will become a reality.

"I applaud the cooperation of local, state and federal officials and I congratulate all who have played a role in this important infrastructure project," Collins added.
