Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) praised the Senate’s passage Monday of their resolution designating 2012 as the ‘Year of the Girl’ to mark the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA, which was also Monday. The resolution recognizes the more than 50,000,000 women in the United States that are Girl Scout alumnae and the importance of empowering girls to lead with courage, confidence, and character.
“I love the Girl Scouts and I love being a Girl Scout. For 100 years, the Girl Scouts have stood for the education and empowerment of girls,” Senator Mikulski said. “The Girl Scouts teach character, honesty, integrity and competency in a movement that has changed America and the world. I’m so proud of all the Girl Scouts have done to fight for women and girls during their first 100 years and am thrilled to help kick off their next 100 years.”
“Girl Scouts taught me that determination, principles, and respect for others, can take you everywhere you want to go,” said Senator Susan Collins. “It’s no coincidence that many of the women Senators that I serve with today were Girl Scouts because scouting teaches so many important lessons. I am delighted to honor this fine organization as it celebrates 100 years.”
“For 100 years, the Girl Scout Organization has been a positive influence in the lives of girls who grow up to make contributions in all walks of life. There is no better organization than the Girl Scouts to guide young women in their formative years.” Sen. Hutchison said. “I was a Girl Scout, as were many of my colleagues in both the House and Senate. The Girl Scouts taught me the importance of honesty, fairness and respect for others. I gained confidence and learned skills I value even today. By instilling a sound foundation of positive values, developing a sense of service, and facilitating creative decision-making, the Girl Scouts continue to help develop girls into model citizens and leaders in our communities, our country, and the world. I am honored to be a part of an organization that encourages young women to pursue their goals - no matter how high.”
In addition to Senators Mikulski, Collins and Hutchison, the resolution is cosponsored by Senators Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Scott Brown (R-Mass.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Ala.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.).
