Senator Collins Announces Nearly $9 Million to Help Prevent COVID-19 Among Maine’s Homeless

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, announced that the State of Maine has been awarded a total of $8,836,614 in the second installment of funding to prevent and respond to COVID-19 among individuals and families who are homeless or receiving homeless assistance. This funding, awarded to the City of Portland and MaineHousing, was allocated through the CARES Act.

In April, Senator Collins announced more than $16.5 million in the first installment of funding to support affordable housing, reduce homelessness, and bolster COVID-19 prevention and response efforts throughout the state.

“During this uncertain time, we must ensure that our most vulnerable populations receive the support and resources they need to stay safe and healthy,” said Senator Collins.  “This important investment will help Maine’s state agencies and local governments as they continue to care for homeless individuals and families throughout our state.”

This funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) Program, will support additional homeless assistance and homelessness prevention activities to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19.

The funding was allocated as follows:

  • The City of Portland received $1,004,425.
  • MaineHousing received $7,832,189.
