Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins announced today that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $58,206 to the Aroostook Band of Micmacs through HUD’s Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) program. The funding will be used to promote affordable housing activities in safe and healthy environments in Presque Isle.
“Indian Housing Block Grants have an important role in helping tribal communities maintain and improve the availability of affordable housing on their lands,” said Senator Collins. “This investment for the Aroostook Band of Micmacs will help support critical projects that provide safe, affordable housing for members of Maine’s northernmost tribe.”
Under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996 (NAHASDA) the Department of HUD provides grants, loan guarantees, and technical assistance to Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages for the development and operation of low-income housing.
