Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Ranking Member of the Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, announced that nine housing authorities in Maine will receive a total of $657,539 to support low-income renters and homeowners. This funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
“Maine’s housing authorities provide an array of vital services to seniors, individuals with disabilities, and low-income families,” said Senator Collins. “As the Ranking Member of the Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, I remain committed to ensuring that the housing needs of Mainers are met. This funding will help provide low-income families the ability to move from rental assistance to self-sufficiency.”
The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program helps HUD-assisted families obtain employment to increase their earned income and reduce their dependency on welfare assistance and rental subsidies.
The Housing Counseling Program provides funds to HUD-approved housing counseling agencies that assist tenants and homeowners with property maintenance, financial management and literacy, and other matters as may be appropriate to assist program clients in improving their housing conditions.
