Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, announced that the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) will receive $27.68 million through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Rural Surface Transportation Grant Program to fund the Northern Maine U.S. Route 1 Road Improvement Project in Frenchville. This program, established through the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), will be used to repair two sections of U.S. Route 1, totaling 10.4 miles. Senator Collins was part of the core group of 10 Senators who negotiated the text of the IIJA.
USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg called Senator Collins to notify her that this project would receive federal funding.
“Connecting communities along the U.S.-Canadian border to families, jobs, health care, and essential goods every day, Route 1 plays a critical role in Northern Maine,” said Senator Collins. “This funding will support important safety and drainage improvements, road and shoulder reconstruction, and the construction of new tie-in roads for driveways and businesses along the corridor.”
The bipartisan infrastructure law is expected to deliver approximately $2.5 billion to Maine over its first five years of enactment for critical broadband, transportation, energy, and environmental projects. Since 2009, when Senator Collins became a member of the Appropriations Committee, she has helped to secure more than $1 billion in competitive transportation grants for the State of Maine.
