Senator Collins Announces More Than $700,000 to Support Affordable Housing Efforts in Maine Amid COVID-19

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Chairman of the Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a total of $729,161 to the Portland and Brunswick public housing agencies to support affordable housing and bolster COVID-19 prevention and response efforts. This funding was awarded through a provision of the CARES Act that Senator Collins authored that directed $48.5 billion to support housing and transportation programs.

“As we continue to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, additional resources are vital to help bolster Maine’s housing programs that serve our seniors, individuals with disabilities, and low-income families,” said Senator Collins.  “As the Chairman of the Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, I worked hard to secure these vital resources for Maine’s communities, and I will continue to ensure they receive assistance during this difficult time.”

The funding will be allocated as follows:

  • The Portland Housing Authority will receive 628,272.

  • The Brunswick Housing Authority will receive $100,889.

As the Chairman of the Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Collins helped to secure a total of $46.5 million in HUD’s CARES Act funding to help communities throughout Maine respond to COVID-19 by protecting affordable housing, providing housing assistance for the homeless, and supporting community development.
