SENATOR COLLINS ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $5 MILLION NAVY CONTRACT

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today announced that the United States Navy has awarded a $5,499,055 contract to Electric Boat in Groton, CT for tradesmen services in support of submarine overhauls.  The work will be performed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.  This contract allows for a range of staffing and includes the following specific trades: shipfitting, sheet metal, welding, outside machinist, electrical/electronics, pipefitting, shipwrights, special hull treatment workers, and paint/blasting.               During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing last week, Senator Collins raised the important need for a stable workload at Kittery with the Secretary of the Navy and the Chief of Naval Operations.  Secretary Winter committed to working with Senator Collins on achieving the goal of providing stable work to Kittery.               “Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is of tremendous value to the Navy and to our overall national security objectives.  It is home to some of our nation’s most experienced experts in submarine design, overhaul, modernization, and maintenance,” said Senator Collins. “I will continue to work closely with the Department of Defense to ensure that it recognizes the important contributions that the Shipyard makes to our country and that it continues to support the work done at Kittery.”               Work is expected to be completed by September 2006.
