SENATOR COLLINS ANNOUNCES $105 MILLION CONTRACT FOR BIW FOR SECOND AND THIRD DDG-1000

U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Appropriations Committees, announced that the U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works (BIW) a contract modification in the amount of $105,353,508 for construction of the second DDG-1000 and for lead materials and pre-production planning of the third DDG-1000.

"This funding is welcome news for BIW and its skilled workers, and it represents the first significant funding for the third DDG-1000 that will be built at BIW," said Senator Collins. "With this contract, the Navy not only continues to show confidence in the tremendous shipbuilding capabilities of BIW's workforce, but it also honors its agreement to build all three DDG-1000's at BIW. This will help ensure a more even workload for the shipyard in the future, and should also help to stabilize production costs for the Navy."

As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Collins worked to secure more than $1 billion in the Fiscal Year 2010 Department of Defense spending bill, which the President signed last December.
