U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Ranking Member of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, announced today that the U.S. Department of Transportation will immediately grant the Maine Department of Transportation $1 million in "quick release" Emergency Relief Funding to help fund the repair of roads and bridges damaged and destroyed during Tropical Storm Irene.
"Many communities, especially in Franklin and Oxford counties, are struggling to rebuild and open roads and bridges destroyed during Tropical Storm Irene," said Senator Collins. "The Maine Department of Transportation reports that nearly 200 roads and a dozen bridges were damaged or destroyed by heavy rain and flooding. This funding will help our state repair and replace this important infrastructure as soon as possible."
The Federal Highway Administration's emergency relief program reimburses states for the repair or reconstruction of federal-aid highways that were damaged in disasters and catastrophic failures.
