Senate Homeland Security Ranking Member Susan Collins released this statement today following her meeting with Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, President-elect Barack Obama's choice to lead the Department of Homeland Security:
“I am certainly impressed with the Governor’s background and knowledge of homeland security issues. We talked about a wide range of issues from border security, to security of our seaports, to cooperation with state and local law enforcement. She brings the background and expertise of a border state governor that will be helpful. As a Senator representing a border state, I especially appreciate that, when it comes to border security, Governor Napolitano understands that we must accommodate legitimate trade and travel. We have to let our friends in, while keeping our enemies out. While I will reserve final judgment until her confirmation hearing has been completed, I look forward to further discussion of these and other important issues.”
