Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins voted in support of the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015, legislation that would give Congress the ability to review and vote on any final nuclear agreement between the Administration and Iran. Senator Collins, a cosponsor of the legislation, released the following statement after today’s vote:
“I’m pleased that this important legislation passed in the United States Senate today with such overwhelming bipartisan support. I strongly believe that Congress has both the constitutional authority and obligation to review and vote on any final agreement with Iran regarding its nuclear program.
“While I cannot yet reach a judgment on the merits of an agreement because negotiations with Iran are continuing, the reported details of the framework leave me with significant questions and concerns. As such, it is imperative that Congress is afforded an opportunity to independently evaluate the merits of the final agreement. It is long overdue for Congress to reassert its role in foreign policy, particularly when an agreement has such significant ramifications for our long-term national security and for stability in the Middle East.”
