Senator Collins’ Statement on Death of ISIS Leader

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Intelligence Committee, released this statement following President Trump’s announcement of a U.S. Special Forces operation in northwestern Syria that led to the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi:

“The successful operation against Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, announced by the President, is a testament to the tremendous skill and bravery of the men and women in our nation’s armed forces.  Our intelligence community and our allies also played important roles.  This impressive raid is a major blow to ISIS, a ruthless terrorist organization responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians. 

“As we celebrate this victory in the war against terrorism, we should also keep in mind the resilience of terrorist groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda and the imperative to keep working with our allies to counter this threat.”
