Senator Collins’ Statement on 75th Commemoration of the Attack on Pearl Harbor

Washington, D.C. — In recognition of the 75th commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor, U.S. Senator Susan Collins issued the following statement:

“Throughout our nation and our state, we pause on this most solemn anniversary in memory of the more than 2,300 Americans who lost their lives 75 years ago, and in gratitude to the millions of Americans who met a great challenge with courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty.

“On the morning of December 7, 1941, America was a nation at peace. Within minutes, the men and women of our armed forces at Pearl Harbor, including many from Maine, found themselves on the front lines of a battle for the future of civilization, and they fought back. In the days that followed, millions more put the comfort and safety of home aside and joined the fight. Throughout the country, Americans of all ages worked and saved and rationed and sacrificed as never before to support our troops.

“On this 75th commemoration of the attack, we honor those who fought and were killed at Pearl Harbor as well as the brave men and women who answered the call to defend our freedoms in World War II and brought liberty to so many others.”
