SENATE PASSES SENATOR COLLINS’ LEGISLATION TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE NEED FOR SCHOOL COUNSELING

The U.S. Senate has unanimously passed legislation, authored by Senator Susan Collins that designates the week of February 2nd as “National School Counseling Week”. Senator Collins joined Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) to see this legislation pass the Senate.

“Adequate school counseling is a critically important issue,” noted Senator Collins. “Elementary and secondary school students must be afforded the counseling they need to ensure they can succeed and grow in the classroom.”

During the 2006-2007 school year, the average student to school counselor ratio in Maine was 305:1. The American School Health Association and the American School Counselor Association recommend a ratio of 250:1.
