Nearly $7.5 Million to Improve Maine Housing Secured by Senator Collins in Funding Bill in First Key Step

Washington, D.C.--U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that she secured $7,486,000 to improve housing across Maine in the draft Fiscal Year 2023 Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill.  

 

As the Ranking Member and lead Republican on the Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Collins secured funding for these projects in the bill, which was officially released by the full Senate Appropriations Committee today and must now be voted upon by the full Senate and House.

 

““As a leader of the Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, I am committed to ensuring that the vital housing and services needs of vulnerable individuals and families are met,” said Senator Collins.  “The funding for these projects would improve the quality and safety of affordable housing across our state and expand resources for residents.  I will continue to champion this funding as the appropriations process moves forward.”

 

Details on the housing projects Senator Collins secured are below:

 

Bangor Housing Opportunity Center

Recipient: Bangor Housing Authority 

Project Location: Bangor, ME

Amount Requested: $2,000,000

Project Purpose: To convert an administrative building to provide training and services for Bangor Housing Authority residents.

 

Indian Township Housing Improvements

Recipient: Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township

Project Location: Indian Township, ME

Amount Requested: $1,000,000

Project Purpose: To make necessary improvements to low-income housing on Indian Township Reservation land in order to eliminate unsafe conditions, decrease utility costs, and reduce emissions.

 

Lewiston Housing Authority - St. Mary's Intergenerational Center

Recipient: Lewiston Housing Authority  

Project Location: Lewiston, ME

Amount Requested: $4,000,000 

Project Purpose: To support construction of a facility to co-locate senior housing, childcare, health care, and social services in partnership with St. Mary’s Hospital. 

 

Fire Safety Upgrades

Recipient: The Mount Desert Housing Authority 

Project Location: Northeast Harbor, ME

Amount Requested: $100,000 

Project Purpose: To support fire safety upgrades for a 18-unit building for low-income, elderly, and disabled residents in Northeast Harbor.

 

Fire Safety Upgrades

Recipient: The Southwest Harbor Housing Authority 

Project Location: Southwest Harbor, ME

Amount Requested: $386,000 

Project Purpose: To support fire safety upgrades for a 32-unit building for low-income, elderly, and disabled residents in Southwest Harbor.
