Nearly $3.7 Million for Maine Veterans’ Homes Advanced by Senator Collins in Funding Bill

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that she advanced $3,680,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending for Maine Veterans’ Homes (MVH) in the Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill.  The bill, which was officially approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee today, now awaits consideration by the full Senate and House.

“Maine Veterans’ Homes provide those who served with access to high-quality rehabilitative and therapy services, as well as long-term, short-term, and dementia nursing care,” said Senator Collins.  “This funding would allow MVH to make important updates to its facilities in six veterans’ homes located throughout the State of Maine.  As the Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to advocate for this funding as the appropriations process moves forward.”

“Maine Veterans’ Homes is grateful to Senator Collins and the Federal Appropriations for including funding for our facilities in the budget,” said Maine Veterans’ Home Chief Executive Officer Sharon Fusco. “This funding will provide critical facility upgrades and equipment that will ensure the continued health and safety of our residents.  This funding ensures our tradition of providing quality care to those who sacrificed for our freedom continues for years to come.”

Established in 1977, MVH provides long term care services to Maine’s Veterans and eligible family members at their locations in Augusta, Caribou, Scarborough, South Paris, Bangor, and Machias.  This funding would support facility and equipment upgrades across MVH’s locations to support continued care for aging veterans.

This funding advanced through the Committee’s markup of the FY24 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill—an important step that now allows the bill to be considered by the full Senate.  Committee consideration of legislation is a key part of regular order, which helps our government function efficiently and deliver results for the people of Maine and America.

In 2021, Congress reinstituted Congressionally Directed Spending.  Following this decision, Senator Collins has secured more than $500 million for hundreds of Maine projects for FY2022 and FY2023.  As the Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Senator Collins is committed to championing targeted investments that will benefit Maine communities.
