LEWISTON STUDENT AWARDED METEOROLOGY FELLOWSHIP

Washington D.C.- Senator Susan Collins announced today that Corey Potvin of Lewiston has been awarded a graduate fellowship to help pursue a Masters degree in meteorology. The fellowship is awarded by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the National Weather Service. It includes a nine-month $22,000 stipend to help pay for graduate school tuition and related expenses Potvin was one of only fifteen students nationwide to be selected for an AMS/National Weather Service fellowship.

"Congratulations to Corey for this well deserved honor. He has demonstrated a real passion for meteorology and a strong ambition to advance in this field," said Senator Collins. "Corey made it through an extremely competitive selection process to be awarded this scholarship. I am confident he will take full advantage of the opportunity and make his parents and the people of Maine proud."

Potvin recently graduated with a Bachelor degree in meteorology and mathematics from Lyndon State College. He intends to pursue a Masters degree in meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. He will focus on developing improved algorithms for detecting tornadoes in level I Doppler radar data. His parents, Gisele Potvin and Keith Williams, live in Lewiston.

The AMS/National Weather Service Graduate Fellowship program was created four years ago to benefit young scientists entering their first year of graduate studies. The program is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the physical sciences.
