Funding for Important Infrastructure Project at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Clears Key Hurdle

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Susan Collins announced today that the Senate Appropriations Committee on which she serves approved $61.7 million in funding for a paint, blast, and rubber fabrication facility at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) in Kittery. The funding was included in the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill at her request.

The project at the shipyard would consolidate nine facilities currently dispersed over 111 acres into a central location and achieve savings at the shipyard.

“This infrastructure project will enable PNSY to significantly increase efficiency at the shipyard, providing valuable support to the highly-skilled employees as they work to repair and modernize Navy submarines,” said Senator Collins, a senior member of the Committee. “I am delighted that the Appropriations Committee approved this funding following my advocacy, and I look forward to it being enacted.”

As a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, Senator Collins works to ensure that projects important to Maine are adequately funded. In May, Senator Collins sent a letter to the leaders of the Appropriations Committee to request that they include the $61.7 million needed for the construction of the new facility at PNSY.

The Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill will now be considered by the full Senate.
