FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE CONSIDERS WAYNE NATIVE FOR ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Wayne native Robert Charles appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today in order to be confirmed to a key post at the United States Department of State. Senator Collins introduced Charles to her colleagues on the committee and urged them to approve his nomination to the post of Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

"Mr. Charles is an extremely well qualified nominee for this key post at the State Department," said Senator Collins. "I commend his commitment to public service and am proud that a Mainer will fill this important position."

Mr. Charles previously served as staff director of the House Subcommittee on National Security, International Affairs, and Criminal Justice chaired by Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.

The Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) advises the President, Secretary of State, and other agencies within the U.S. Government on the development of policies and programs to combat international narcotics and crime.

"The trafficking of illegal narcotics presents a threat to the security of the United States and its citizens. It is vital that we stem the flow of illegal drugs into our nation."
