DOD Announces Sen. Collins-Backed Plan Allowing Reserve And Guard Members To Access Health Care Coverage

Washington, DC — Senator Susan Collins is applauding the Department of Defense (DOD) for announcing that some National Guard and Reserve members are now eligible to participate in a comprehensive health care plan. Beginning in April, Guard and Reserve members who have been called to active duty since September 11, 2001, will be able to access Tricare Reserve Select (TRS), a new premium-based health care plan for members and their families.

"National Guard and Reserve members put their lives at risk to serve our country. The least we can do is ensure that they receive health care once they return home," Senator Collins said. "I am pleased that the Department of Defense has taken the first step in seeing that some of our reservists and National Guard members receive essential health care coverage that they have rightly earned through their service."

According to the Department of Defense, members are eligible for one year of TRS coverage for each 90 days of continuous active duty service. For example, members who serve 360 days in active duty are eligible for four years of coverage. TRS coverage is only available while the Member serves in the Reserve.

Senator Collins fought for provisions that were included in the Fiscal Year 2005 Defense Authorization bill that would allow Guard and Reservists to receive health care coverage.
