Congress Approves More Than $42 Million for Maine Hospitals and Health Centers Secured by Senator Collins
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that she secured $42,297,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending for Maine hospitals and health centers in the Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill. Congress has passed the bill, and the President has signed it into law.
“Ensuring Mainers in every part of the state receive the critical medical services they need is always a priority,” said Senator Collins. “As Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I worked hard to secure this funding, which will help to improve access to, and the quality of, an array of health care services throughout Maine.”
Funding secured by Senator Collins for Maine hospitals and health centers in the FY24 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill is as follows:
Baileyville Rural Health Center
Recipient: Calais Community Hospital
Project Location: Baileyville, ME
Amount Secured: $1,354,000
Project Purpose: To construct and equip a new Rural Health Center.
Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
Recipient: Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
Project Location: Bangor, ME
Amount Secured: $366,000
Project Purpose: For facilities and equipment to improve safety and accessibility.
East Machias Clinic Expansion
Recipient: Regional Medical Center at Lubec
Project Location: East Machias, ME
Amount Secured: $5,000,000
Project Purpose: To construct and equip a health care facility in Washington County.
Eastport Health Center Expansion
Recipient: Eastport Health Care
Project Location: Eastport, ME
Amount Secured: $5,061,000
Project Purpose: To construct and equip a new dental, medical, and behavioral health center.
St. Joseph Hospital MRI Upgrade

Project Purpose: To purchase and install a new MRI machine.
Mount Desert Hospital Emergency Department Renovation and Expansion

Air Quality Control System Enhancements

Cary Medical Electronic Medical Records Infrastructure Improvement

Project Purpose: For facilities and equipment to support an electronic medical records platform.
Islesboro Health Center
Recipient: Town of Islesboro
Project Location: Islesboro, ME

Project Purpose: To construct and equip a health center.
Central Maine Medical Center Surgical Technology Upgrades

Project Purpose: For surgical technology facilities and equipment.
Millinocket Regional Hospital Emergency Department Expansion
Recipient: Millinocket Regional Hospital
Project Location: Millinocket, ME
Amount Secured: $9,893,000
Project Purpose: To construct and equip a new Emergency Department.
This funding is part of the 231 targeted investments Senator Collins secured through the FY2024 appropriations process, driving more than $577 million to the state for projects throughout each of Maine’s 16 counties.
In 2021, Congress reinstituted Congressionally Directed Spending. Following this decision, Senator Collins secured more than $500 million for hundreds of Maine projects for FY2022 and FY2023.
