The funding now heads to the President to be signed into law
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that she secured $18,010,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending for Maine housing projects in the Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) appropriations bill. The bill, which was included in legislation that passed the Senate today, now heads to the President to be signed into law.
“Affordable housing is critical to supporting vulnerable individuals and families throughout Maine,” said Senator Collins. “As Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I worked hard to secure this funding, which will help to improve the quality and safety of affordable and emergency housing across the state and expand resources for residents.”
Funding secured by Senator Collins for Maine affordable housing and emergency projects in the FY 2024 THUD appropriations bill is as follows:
Affordable Housing Projects:
Community Concepts Housing
Recipient: Community Concepts, Inc.
Project Location: Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford Counties, ME
Amount Requested: $3,721,000
Project Purpose: To renovate 12 of Community Concepts' low-income rental housing properties.
Centre Street Housing
Recipient: Bath Housing Development Corporation
Project Location: Bath, ME
Amount Requested: $4,000,000
Project Purpose: To create new rental low- to moderate-income housing in Bath.
St. Croix Apartments Renovation
Recipient: St. Croix Apartments
Project Location: Calais, ME
Amount Requested: $1,200,000
Project Purpose: To return to service 26 units of affordable housing with support services to low-income seniors in Calais.
Western Maine Multi-Family Housing
Recipient: Workforce Housing Coalition Western Maine Mountains
Project Location: Western Maine
Amount Requested: $1,500,000
Project Purpose: To construct an affordable multi-family building.
Indian Township Housing Renovation
Recipient: Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township
Project Location: Indian Township Reservation, Princeton, ME
Amount Requested: $2,000,000
Project Purpose: To improve the health and wellness of approximately 300 households within the Passamaquoddy Tribal Reservation by upgrading heating and cooling, mold remediation, insulation, and replacing exterior windows, doors, and siding.
Quarry Road Assisted Housing Renovation
Recipient: SKILLS, Inc.
Project Location: Waterville, ME
Amount Requested: $1,540,000
Project Purpose: To construct affordable housing units for adults with disabilities.
Stonington Affordable Housing Initiative
Recipient: Town of Stonington
Project Location: Stonington, ME
Amount Requested: $549,000
Project Purpose: To create housing for low- to moderate-income individuals.
Emergency Housing Projects:
Tedford Emergency Housing
Recipient: Tedford Housing
Project Location: Brunswick, ME
Amount Requested: $1,500,000
Project Purpose: To construct a 64-bed emergency housing facility.
Joe's Place Teen Center and Shelter
Recipient: Preble Street
Project Location: Portland, ME
Amount Requested: $2,000,000
Project Purpose: To support construction of a new facility that would consolidate Preble Street's daytime Teen Center and nighttime Teen Shelter into one building.
In 2021, Congress reinstituted Congressionally Directed Spending. Following this decision, Senator Collins has secured more than $500 million for hundreds of Maine projects for FY2022 and FY2023. As the Vice Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Senator Collins is committed to championing targeted investments that will benefit Maine communities.
