COLLINS RELEASES STATEMENT ON NEWS THAT SADDAM HUSSEIN’S SONS HAVE BEEN KILLED IN IRAQ

WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Susan Collins, who is a Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and recently traveled to Iraq, has released the following statement with regard to today's news that Uday and Qusay have been killed in Iraq.

"As I learned during my recent trip to Iraq, there remains a climate of fear among the Iraqi people, caused by the concern that the evil regime of Saddam Hussein and his sons could return to Iraq and regain dominance. This fear has been a major impediment to further progress in our efforts.

"Uday and Qusay were directly involved in the torment, torture, rape and murder of thousands of Iraqi citizens. Their crimes against their own people are heinous and unthinkable. The deaths of Uday and Qusay represent a significant victory in the effort to form a stable, democratic form of government that is recognized in all regions of Iraq.

"This is very positive news for the people of Iraq and for the American soldiers who have tirelessly fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"I am very proud of our troops for their continued outstanding efforts in Iraq."
