Adelphia announced it is restructuring the company's call centers across the country by greatly reducing the amount of business it is taking in the form of incoming calls. Nationwide, the company will close 59 of its 70 centers that receive incoming customer calls. In Maine, Adelphia will reduce its workforce at its call centers in Augusta and Bangor. Company officials estimate that 50 to 100 Maine employees will be laid-off.
"I am disappointed that another major employer in Maine is implementing cutbacks that will leave up to 100 people out of work. It is always disturbing when employees lose their jobs through no fault of their own and because of circumstances beyond their control," said Senator Collins. "I will provide assistance in any way I can to help the dislocated workers get through this difficult time and transition to other job opportunities."
Adelphia representatives have contacted Senator Collins office for guidance in helping dislocated workers with job search support and alternative job training. The company is also offering dislocated workers a severance package and the opportunity to move with the company to call centers in other parts of the country.
