Collins, King Welcome Maine Girls Nation Delegates To Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today welcomed Maine Girls Nation delegates Elise Dumont of Newcastle and Salma Mohamed of Auburn to Washington. The American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation Program welcomes two representatives from each state who travel to Washington where the young leaders learn about the structure and function of the federal government.

“Elise and Salma are very impressive young women, and it was a pleasure to welcome them to our nation’s capital today,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. “The Girls Nation program is an important window into how things work in Washington, and we are proud that Maine is so well-represented in this valuable learning experience for some of America’s future leaders.”

Since 1947, the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation has convened for a week in Washington to learn the qualities of leadership and good governance. Each delegate acts as a senator from her state and learns to organize committees and conduct hearings on bills submitted by fellow delegates. Senators Collins and King also met with the Maine delegates to the American Legion Boys Nation Program when they visited last week.

Dumont and Mohamed were selected from 240 delegates who attended the Dirigo Girls State Program held last month at Husson University.
