WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will award the National Partnership for Environmental Technology Education (PETE) in South Portland $1,151,074 through the Hazardous Waste Worker Health and Safety Training Program. The funding will support National PETE’s Community College Consortium for Health and Safety Training Program.
“Understanding the dangers of hazardous waste and the best practices for its proper disposal are critical to the protection of our communities,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This grant funding will aid workers, technicians, and supervisors in their training and build on their knowledge of hazardous materials – making Maine a safer and more environmentally responsible place in the process.”
National PETE’s Community College Consortium for Health and Safety Training Program trains participants to protect themselves and their communities from exposure to hazardous materials encountered during waste site cleanup, disaster site cleanup, Brownfields redevelopment, and the transportation of such materials. The funding is awarded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, one of the 27 institutes that combine to form the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services.
