Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) joined a bipartisan group of 37 Senators in introducing a resolution to honor the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
The resolution states:
“Now therefore be it resolved that the Senate commemorates, on December 16, 2019, the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II; recognizes the valiant efforts of the various Allied Forces; and remembers the individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice, which contributed to the Allied victory in the European Theater.”
“In December 1944, when the Allies were on the cusp of victory in World War II, Nazi troops launched a major counteroffensive in the Ardennes Forest that, if successful, could have altered the outcome of the war. Exhibiting tremendous bravery, American troops slowed, stopped, and ultimately turned back German troops, continuing their march to liberate Western Europe from tyranny,” said Senator Collins. “This bipartisan resolution honors the sacrifices made by the thousands of Americans who perished in battle, those who survived but have since passed on, and those living today. It also reaffirms our commitment to always honor, respect, and thank our veterans— a lesson I first learned from my father, a World War II combat veteran who earned two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star as a result of injuries he sustained in the Battle of the Bulge.”
In addition to Senator Collins, the bipartisan resolution was introduced by Senators Kevin Cramer (R-N.D), Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), Dan Sullivan (R-A.K.), Steve Daines (R-M.T.), Johnny Isakson (R-G.A.), Jon Cornyn (R-T.X.), Bill Cassidy (R-L.A.), Shelley Moore Capito (D-W.V.), Ted Cruz (R-T.X.), Pat Roberts (R-K.S.), Marco Rubio (R-T.X.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Joni Ernst (R-I.A.), Jerry Moran (R-K.S.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Roger Wicker (R-M.S.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-M.S.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Jim Risch (R-I.D.), Todd Young (R-I.N.), John Boozman (R-A.R.), Marsha Blackburn (R-T.N.), John Kennedy (R-L.A.), John Barasso (R-W.Y.), Rick Scott (R-F.L.), Cory Gardner (R-C.O.), Pat Toomey (R-P.A.), Tammy Baldwin (D-W.I.), Doug Jones (D-A.L.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Michael Bennet (D-C.O.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Jon Tester (D-M.T.), Jacky Rosen (D-N.V.) and Chris Van Hollen (D-M.D.).
In June, Senator Collins was part of the official, bipartisan Senate Delegation that commemorated the 75thanniversary of the D-Day invasion at the American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. During her visit, Senator Collins met with Maine World War II veterans as well as with Madawaska native Scott Desjardins, the superintendent of the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. Previously, Mr. Desjardins was the superintendent of the American cemetery in Luxembourg, which commemorates the Battle of the Bulge.
