COLLINS ISSUES STATEMENT REACTING TO PRESIDENT’S SPEECH ON IRAQ

BANGOR -- Senator Susan Collins, who is a Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and recently traveled to Iraq and last year to Afghanistan, released the following statement with regard to President Bush's address to the nation this evening.

"I share President Bush's belief that forging ahead with our nation's mission in Afghanistan and Iraq is critical to the war on terrorism. I was pleased to hear his emphasis on the need for additional help from the international community. The recent bombing of the UN building was a stark reminder that this is a very dangerous region of the globe, that our work is far from finished, and that we need to broaden the role of the Iraqi people and the international community.

"During my recent trip to Iraq, I saw first hand many examples of the positive impact this military operation has had on the people of Iraq. But I also saw first hand examples of the dangers that face our troops on a daily basis. The loss of Americans' lives is a constant and serious concern. It became clear to me during my visit that our troops need as much support as possible to ensure their safety and that it is imperative that we receive more help from the international community. The Administration's willingness to ask the United Nations for international support is a step in right direction.

"The President also reminded us of the fiscal reality of a major military operation. This is an expensive endeavor, but as long as our troops are in harm's way, we must see to it that they have the supplies, equipment and support they need.

"In addition, my hope is that some portion of this expenditure can be structured as a loan, with revenues from Iraqi oil production ultimately being used to pay the American people for much of the reconstruction costs.

"As a Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will look very closely at the President's supplemental spending proposal as soon as it is brought before the US Senate."
