"The President has delivered a strong and uplifting message to the American people. Tonight's speech provided a clear outline of ways to address many of the issues and challenges that are important to our country.
"I join him in applauding our troops and recognizing the hard work and noble sacrifices these men and women are making on behalf of our freedom and that of nations that have not known freedom for decades. Iraq is still a very dangerous region of the world. But we have made progress; the Iraqi people have been liberated from a brutal dictator, the nation is moving toward democracy, and our world is a safer place without Saddam Hussein ruling Iraq. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and as Chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, I will continue to work with our President to strengthen our national defense and homeland security. "The Presidents outlined a plan to help address the increasing costs of health care and the millions of Americans who cannot afford health insurance. 180,000 Mainers find themselves in the unfortunate position of being unable to afford health insurance. I will work with the President in the coming months to help more of these families obtain health insurance, and I will push for legislation that provides incentive to help small businesses offer health care coverage.
"It is encouraging that our economy is on the upswing. Unfortunately, however, Maine is not yet benefiting from this stronger economy. Our state has lost a greater percentage of manufacturing jobs over the past few years than any other. I am encouraged that the President shares my concern for the need to preserve manufacturing jobs and to help workers succeed in a changing economy, by expanding job training and education programs.
"Despite our challenges both home and abroad, we are the strongest nation on earth and will continue to have the resolve to meet these challenges."
