WASHINGTON, D.C. - On "Asthma Awareness Day," Senator Susan Collins announced that she is backing bipartisan legislation along with Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) to help ensure that children at highest risk for asthma, vision, and hearing problems are screened and treated. The bill also authorizes a $20 million grant program that would provide funds to Head Start sites and local educational agencies to screen children for vision, hearing and asthma problems.
"Cases of asthma among Maine children are on the rise," said Senator Collins. "This bill seeks to identify children suffering from asthma early in their lives and get them the treatment they need to live full and productive lives."
Today, on "Asthma Awareness Day," Senator Collins met with advocates for children who suffer with asthma to discuss her legislation, which has been referred to the Senate Health Committee.
