Washington, D.C.--U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that she secured $2.5 million for Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) in the Fiscal Year 2023 Education appropriations bill.
The omnibus funding package passed the Senate by a vote of 68-29. It will now be passed by the House before heading to the President’s desk to be signed into law.
“Shipyards and vessels are undergoing a rapid digital transition that is transforming the entire maritime industry,” said Senator Collins. “Maine Maritime Academy has a stellar record of preparing generations of sailors through its exceptional program, and this funding will help ensure that instructors can train students on the most cutting-edge technology in their field.”
“Senator Collins’ leadership on global maritime innovation is making a difference here in Castine, Maine, as we prepare the next generation of mariners to serve our country worldwide,” said Jerry Paul, President of Maine Maritime Academy.
The funding for this project will strengthen MMA’s licensure program and establish new higher education degree pathways in support of vessel digitization and energy efficiency initiatives. MMA will use this investment to acquire critical equipment and technology, including vertical milling machines, 3D printers, software, video monitors, and electrical and IT upgrades.
