$1.5 Million for Rockland Pier Secured by Senator Collins

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Susan Collins announced today that she secured $1,500,000 for the Rockland commercial fish pier redevelopment project in the Fiscal Year 2022 Transportation and Housing Appropriations bill.  As the Ranking Member and lead Republican on the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Collins co-authored this bill.

The omnibus funding package passed the House and the Senate and now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law.

“Rockland’s fishing industry is an important part of the city’s heritage, and it continues to be an integral part of the local and state economies,” said Senator Collins.  “The funding for this project will provide significant benefits to the community and the region, from improving safety to maintaining fishermen’s access to the working waterfront.  This support comes at a critical time for the industry, which is facing numerous headwinds from unfair regulations and retaliatory tariffs to changing ocean conditions.  I strongly advocated for this funding that will help hardworking Maine fishermen and their families.”

“This funding will enable Rockland’s Fish Pier to continue to serve commercial vessels and marine businesses from throughout the region, and we are so grateful to Senator Collins for her  support,” said Julie Hashem, Rockland’s Community Development Director.  “The Fish Pier provides working access for traditional  fishing, for emerging opportunities, and for supplying island communities.  It’s an important part of our past, present and future.”

The Rockland pier needs major deck, structural, and electrical work typical of similar facilities at this stage of life, as well as site stabilization.  The City of Rockland will use this funding to make repairs and resiliency improvements necessary to continue to provide safe and affordable working waterfront access for the region at this municipally-owned facility.
