Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today that she secured $1,500,000 for age-friendly renovations at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor in the Fiscal Year 2022 Health and Human Services Appropriations bill.
The omnibus funding package passed the House and the Senate and now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law.
“St. Joseph Hospital provides world-class health care services to thousands of people each year, including a high percentage of older Mainers in the region,” said Senator Collins. “This funding will help make needed, age-friendly renovations to the hospital’s 60-year-old facilities, improving its ability to care for our aging population and enhancing the overall inpatient experience.”
“As a community healthcare system who cares for an aging population, we are grateful for the support from Senator Susan Collins and other members of the Congressional delegation who supported the request of St. Joseph Healthcare to receive funding to become an Age-Friendly Health System,” said Mary Prybylo, RN, MSN, FACHE, President of St. Joseph Hospital and Senior Vice President of Covenant. “Operating under this model of care means value is optimized for all – patients, families, caregivers, health care providers, and the organization. Even more, being an Age-Friendly organization shows a continued commitment to quality care for our community - meeting them where they are in their health journey. Having support at a federal level for such important initiatives, provides us with the ability to enhance the care and experience our patients receive and deserve. We are excited to embark upon these projects to transform our organization in such a way to better meet the needs of our community.”
In addition to the physical infrastructure improvements, the funding will help St. Joseph Hospital provide additional staff training on how best to care for patients with dementia.
